A Core Principles Focus
In addition to the traditional curricula of Qigong and Taijiquan, it is also important to include a broader study of their respective core principles.
Principles are fundamental truths or propositions that make up the foundation of any system of thought or behavior.
In theory, all principles are said to represent certain “laws of nature”. In practice, they are what make any system effective and helpful to us.
It is possible to study Qigong and Taijiquan with a primary focus on choreography (the movements involved in the practice) with maybe a secondary consideration for some of the underlying principles involved. While this can yield some fair results, it is far more effective to approach our study with an emphasis on principles first. Our movement can then develop as an expression of our core understanding.
Examples of the principles found in qigong include: dynamic relaxation, conscious breathing, and mental and emotional focus. Taiji shares many of the same principles as qigong as well as others more specific to its use as a martial art.
I believe that the more we understand the fundamental principles of our art, the more enjoyable and effective our experience becomes. Whether we are just beginning or have been at it for years, the foundation work will always enrich us and take us forward.
You’ll find periodic discussions on core principles on my home page blog. You’ll find a core principles approach to learning qigong in my book The Heart of Qigong . I also offer regular classes and workshops which delve deeply into core principles and practices. These are a great way to begin or to further the effectiveness and enjoyment of your art.
